Weekly Dose (8/31/08)

First song is The Kooks covering MGMT’s “Kids” from the album Oracular Spectacular.  “Kids” is my favorite track from the MGMT album and I’m really excited to see MGMT for only my second time on September 20th, with Spoon, opening for Beck at the Hollywood Bowl (little inside scoop here-  Beck is getting between a 21-40 piece orchestra for the show).  I think The Kooks did a great job with this cover, turning the originally dance-rock, electronic heavy track into a lighter, acoustic version.

Second song is Isaac Hayes covering Bill Withers’ classic track “Use Me”.  It’s a live recording but I’m not sure exactly when it was made.  It’s definitely not an early Hayes recording but it is a nice song to remember the legend also known as the Black Moses.  My favorite Isaac Hayes track is the second song from the soundtrack of Shaft, “Bumpy’s Lament”.  Email me back if you would like me to send it to you.  It’s truly an amazing track from the R&B/Soul master.  But as far as the song on this email- Hayes definitely puts a uniquely Hayes-esque feeling of soul to the already soulful “Use Me”…

Third song is Otis Redding covering the Rolling Stones’ classic hit “Satisfaction”.  I’ve read in many places that Otis Redding was the quintessential Stax era performer blowing away artists and fans alike.  The soul and feeling he is credited with mastering in live shows is definitely evident in this track…
