Happy Columbus Day everyone, today I have a hipsters delight for you. Since I know a lot of people in LA are looking forward to Santogold tonight and the Ting Tings this week many of you may notice the abundance of Latinos in the audience. Yes that is correct bands like Ting Tings, Santogold, The Killers, The Smiths, Morrissey, Beck, The Mars Volta, etc. all have their place in Latin American countries and the Latino community. While their music is being sold in Spanish speaking countries and continue to tour to our neighbors to the south and around the globe it was only a matter of time before that kid in the garage starting sounding a lot like his US influences. The band for this week is Porter from Guadalajara, Mexico. These four young hipsters released their full length Atemahawke on Tercer Piso records and is distributed by UMG Mexico and quickly was a favorite to the Latin hipster. Filling venues throughout Mexico the band made their US debut here in Los Angeles selling out the John-Anson Ford Amphitheatre and had fans downloading and spreading the word like wildfire. The band quickly got a cult like following and with their unique stage presence and catchy experimental indie rock they were set to be one of the main acts at Mexico’s largest festival, Vive Latino. Their first single off Atemahawke was a song sung in English entitled Host of a Ghost which was not only the first song in English to be released to radio by a Latin rock band but one that did it so well! Porter has blended English choruses with Spanish verses and is a true sign of how influential American artists are. Most recently Juan Son (Singer/Ice Cream cone below) was featured singing side by side with Julieta Venegas on her MTV Unplugged performance for the song De Mis Pasos, look for his solo project due out early 2009.
