I’m not a huge fan of mash-ups but when you combine one of my favorite hip hop artists of all time in De La Soul with one of the legendary pioneers of funk in Fela Kuti, you have a winner in my book. Hip hop was definitely in the building at the Hollywood Palladium on Friday night when a couple of classic acts and an up and comer came to rock LA. Arriving half-way through Nosaj Thing’s set with low expectations, what I saw was a pleasant surprise and a fresh take on hip hop and turntableism as he wet the crowd’s appetite for my personal main event of the night, De La Soul. De La did not disappoint either as Posdnous, Dave, and Maceo came out and rocked the crowd as usual mixing up the tunes with classics (“Saturdays”, “Me Myself and I”) to newer, still funky tracks like “Days of Our Lives” and “Much More”. Highlight for me was the J Dilla tribute where they played tracks from Stakes Is High including my all-time De La favorite “The Bizness”. These three hip hop pioneers did a great job of getting the crowd ready for the headliner in Z-Trip. When Z-Trip hit the stage, he came out to a crowd foaming at the mouth waiting for some more hip hop and he came through and delivered the bad crap, in a good way. He slowly sucked the crowd in by spinning classic tracks from the golden era and clearly displaying his master of the turntables with moments of scratching that were able to put smiles on everyone. The Palladium may not have been sold out on this night, but what the crowd lacked in size, it made up for in energy and straight up love for hip hop. Z-Trip surprised everyone by bringing LL Cool J out for his swan song I would imagine, as he performed classic tracks from his catalog including “Doin It”, “Mama Said”, and “Rock the Bells”. LL and his ridiculously massive frame destroyed the crowd and by 1:30 when the lights came up, the crowd filtered out into the Hollywood night with their hip hop appetite satisfied, at least for one night.

It’s almost my bed time, but I couldn’t go to sleep without posting a teaser clip from the new High Stakes Poker Season 5, which begins on March 1st at 9 PM on the GSN Network. This show is amazing for many reasons, but everyone I have talked to has agreed that this is the best poker show on TV, and herein this clip is just one reason why. The hero in this clip is Patrik Antonious who is one of the most notorious high stakes players in the game, and the villain in the clip is none other than the UnabomberPhil Laak. Enjoy the scene, and one other side note about Antonious. He is currently involved in an online high stakes challenge proposed to him by Tom “Durrrrrrrr” Dwan in which Dwan challenged any poker player in the world to 50,000(yes, 50,000) hands of either Pot Limit Omaha or No-Limit Holdem online multi-tabling 4 tables at a time at $200/$400 stakes. The catch is that if the challenger after 50,000 hands is up in money after all is said and done, Dwan will pay $1.5 million(yes, $1.5 Million) to the challenger; however, if Dwan wins, the challenger must pony up an additional $500K. So far, Antonious, Phil Ivey, and David Benyamine have agreed to the challenge, but Antonious was the first to get it started. After about 4,000 hands played to date, Dwan is currently up $150K. Stronger – Kanye West VH1 Storytellers

Looks like Kanye West is following in the footsteps of Jay-Z and the Roots in doing a Vh1 Storytellers concert this weekend. The entire concert airs on Saturday at 9 PM EST. Here’s a video of him performing “Stronger”, fully equipped with his 1980s’ mullet style hair cut screaming “Is this what you’ve been waiting for?!?!”, Kanye can still move a crowd and from what I’ve heard, his Glow in the Dark tour was definitely a crowd pleaser.

MY PRESIDENT (JAY Z REMIX)

In honor of today’s historic occasion…(in case you didn’t know, Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th President today to a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people and hundreds of millions of people intently watching on TVs around the globe).

I had a feeling Jay-Z aka Sean Carter was going to drop a verse or 2 on this track as soon as Obama was elected (click “My President (Jay-Z Remix) above). Young Jeezy had the original for this track featuring Nas, featured on his recent record with a fitting title called “The Recession”.

When I first heard “My President” it was immediately my favorite track off the album and I could tell this could easily turn into an Anthem for an entire generation of African-Americans that have felt slighted for the past few decades leading back to Martin Luther King Jr. While the track was released prior to Obama being elected President, one has to acknowledge the fact that regardless if Obama won or lost the Election, he had made his presence known throughout our country as a voice of Change, Reason, and Hope.
