The Heavy is a solid rock band with a funky, gritty, bluesy feel. Their sound manages to combine vintage guitar riffs with a modern style of genre blending. The single, “How You Like Me Now” seems like a perfect fit for any Guy Ritchie movie. The band formed in the UK releasing their debut album, Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, in 2007. Their sophomore release, The House That Dirt Built was released earlier this month and it’s got some very impressive tracks. Their songs are filled with energy and emotion and some have an epic, cinematic kind of style. Check out some of my favorites below…

Music enthusiasts and bloggers spend a lot of time searching for the next big buzz-worthy band so we can share it with everyone before everyone else is already talking about it. The Diamond Light are so good and so new they are exactly the kind of band we love to love. We think everyone will love it and we loved it first. The Diamond Light’s edgy, bluesy rock is mature and full of emotion. The lead singer has a powerful, soulful rock style of singing that often draws comparisons to Caleb Followil of Kings of Leon. The Diamond Light’s first release is an EP called Krotona. It was just released this week and it’s got 8 tracks of authentic, infectious rock. The record release party is Wednesday, August 26th at Dragonfly. Their live show is awesome, full of energy. Definitely make it out to see them if you can.

A little over a week ago, I heard a great, new Thom Yorke track on the radio. The song Yorke’s version of Miracle Legion’s “All For The Best” that he recorded and contributed to the album Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy. The album is a tribute to Mark Mulcahy who lost his wife 1 year prior to the album’s release date, September 2009. Check out the original if you haven’t heard it. It’s a great track and Thom Yorke did an impressively distinctive cover of it.

Portugal. The Man released their new album, The Satanic Satanist, on July 21st. The blues-style indie rock sound is undeniably attractive and it isn’t just limited to 1 or 2 tracks. The album is great all the way through. These are some of my favorites…

Rakim hasn’t released an album since The Master in 1999. There was supposed to be one released in 2002 but Dr Dre, who was producing the album, and Rakim cited “creative differences” when they announced that they would not be releasing an album. Pretty much since then, I haven’t even tried to keep up with the drama surrounding the album, I just want to hear it. ”Holy Are You” was released on July 28th and is the first single from the upcoming album The Seventh Seal.

It’s been a couple of weeks, maybe a month, since Muse released their newest track, “United Stated of Eurasia.” The song has been compared to Queen, as has Muse, and especially the lead singers of both bands. Matthew Bellamy isn’t as great as Freddie Mercury, but they are from very different times so it’s hard to compare them. But the sound and style of “United States of Eurasia” is so similar to Queen’s rock-opera anthems that it makes it hard not to compare them. To be honest, I don’t really care. Muse is different enough even though this song’s resemblance to Queen’s sound is unmistakable but the song is enjoyable nonetheless. I don’t love it, but it’s good. For me, comparisons like that will occasionally take the fun out of listening and that’s perhaps the best reason of all to try to sound more original.

Thenewno2 played at The Regent downtown around Main and 5th. You walk through a short hallway with different pieces of art hanging on the walls before entering the small theater which has a very intimate feel to it and surprisingly great acoustics. Thenewno2 played the best show I’ve seen from them yet. The fantastic set of psychedelic rock blended perfectly with the feeling and mood of the venue. It made for an incredibly enjoyable show. Lead singer Dhani Harrison took out a megaphone for “Give You Love” and the place started going wild. Then I realized how quickly the room filled up for Thenewno2′s set. The fans came for a show and it was a great one. Another awesome moment came when keyboardist/guitarist/backup vocalist Jon Sadoff and Dhani both started shredding a heavy rock riff on their guitars right next to each other on the small stage with everyone in the audience jumping around, getting crazy, having a great time.

After Thenewno2′s show downtown at the Regent, Danny Chaimson started his set at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Chaimson is a talented singer/songwriter with a bluesy, funky jam band kind of sound. He put on a fun and impressive, feel good performance with a great crowd of his fans and friends. Although the artist only looks to be in his twenties, his music was that of a an old and refined blues soul. I was really impressed with the show and had yet another excellent music experience- two great shows in one night- now on to Vegas…

May 17
Fight From Above played at Molly Malones in Hollywood and it was another awesome set. Lead singer Justin Miner was recovering from pneumonia and his voice still sounded incredible. Their live shows have a much more aggressive, edgy sound than L.A. Kids, their debut full length album. L.A. Kids is perfect the way it is, but you have to love it when a band turns it up a notch for the live performances. The energy virtually explodes out of Dave on drums and Zack and Krook blast the crowd with guitar, bass, and backup vocals. It was an energetic and enjoyably visceral live music experience and a perfect way to end the weekend….
