ARI ROZE – “Endless Memory”

Ari Roze’s “Endless Memory” is seductively smooth, soulful, and funky. I forget where I first heard it, but I needed to check out some of his other tracks. Mighty Highness, his label, uploaded his songs (here) on SoundCloud along with some other really great tracks from other groups on their roster. Roze’s music really stuck with me. It kind of reminded me of Mocky – “Birds of a Feather” which I still occasionally throw on. There’s a warm quality to Roze’s sound, a vintage style that, for me, is impossible to resist. It’s best explained in this quote off his bio:

Ari Roze is a musician, composer & record collector hailing originally from Fire Island N.Y…& now living on the east coast of Australia…. Ari is not into taking the path of creating sample based or digitally fabricated music. Thus has emerged a recording studio focused on quality organic sounds. Original clavinet and rhodes keyboards, 60’s drum kits, RCA ribbon mics, Ampex tape, valve mic pre’s, tape echoes and a selection of killer musicians fill the space where original songwriting and musicianship are paramount.

“Vosotros is music for you all.” The latest release from the impeccably eclectic label is Everybody by Ja Prawn. This is some very cool stuff, surprisingly focused and well structured for how cool it really is. It’s electro-funk at it’s finest with a thick coat of vintage 80′s gloss. Vosotros describes Ja Prawn as “a demigod sculpted of synth sludge, apocalyptic sci-fi soundtracks, and pawn shop lo-fi glory.” Each song is an experimental adventure of sound and the album as a whole is a true musical journey, one you’re sure to enjoy. Breakbot

I couldn’t find much info on Breakbot. I think he’s French, but some people say he’s Australian. All I know for sure is, I like the music this man makes. From his own mellow, funky material to his high-energy dance floor remixes, all of Breakbot’s productions have given him a name in the blogosphere. His debut EP on Ed Banger Records is set to be released on Valentine’s Day. Lateef – Truth Is Love

Back in March, DJ D Sharp put together a mix tape for Lateef the Truth Speaker but it wasn’t released on any major online distributor like Amazon or CD Universe until November (it’s not available on iTunes). Truth Is Love is a collection of songs featuring Lateef taken from albums released in the last 10-15 years but it’s comprised mostly of Lateef’s more recent tracks. Overall, I was a little disappointed with this mix tape. Back in the 90′s, Lateef was at the top of my list of rappers because of projects like Latyrx and the Solesides collective which turned into the Quannum. Lateef was an incredible emcee with a distinctive delivery unmatched in style and creativity. Unfortunately, most of his new stuff is just not that great anymore. Some of his old school fans are much more critical than I am but I can definitely understand where they’re coming from. Except for a couple of tracks, including “Lady Don’t Tek No” hidden at the end of “That Old Pair of Jeans”, Truth Is Love doesn’t have too much to offer. The Heavy – The House That Dirt Built

The Heavy is a solid rock band with a funky, gritty, bluesy feel. Their sound manages to combine vintage guitar riffs with a modern style of genre blending. The single, “How You Like Me Now” seems like a perfect fit for any Guy Ritchie movie. The band formed in the UK releasing their debut album, Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, in 2007. Their sophomore release, The House That Dirt Built was released earlier this month and it’s got some very impressive tracks. Their songs are filled with energy and emotion and some have an epic, cinematic kind of style. People Under The Stairs – Carried Away and Remix Contest

People Under the Stairs released their 7th album, Carried Away, on Om Records earlier this month. The Los Angeles duo are known for creating west coast style party hip hop with distinctively chill, sample heavy beats. The sound of the new album is just as fun and cool as PUTS has ever been. Tracks like “80 Blocks from Silverlake” and “Come On, Let’s Get High” are instant PUTS classics. These guys really know how to get head bobbing.

Carried Away (October 2009)

Their sense of humor really comes through in their music and especially in the video for the single, “Trippin’ at the Disco.” According to Thes One, Double K paid $654 “to have award winning Afro Stylist Cheryll Teegans do his hair for the video.” Check it out here:
