Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs

Clearly, I haven’t been paying enough attention to Yo La Tengo.  At least, not until their latest record, Popular Songs.  A friend needed only to play me the first track, “Here To Fall” and I instantly realized the folly of my ways.  The combination of heavy rock and strings is irresistibly cool.  The song is a throwback to Zeppelin and other 70s heavy rock yet it maintains a relevance to today’s music.  It isn’t just enjoyable, it’s impressive, especially if you listen to bands like The Dead Weather, Heartless Bastards, or Band of Skulls.

The Knux – Fuck You EP

On January 1st, The Knux announced via twitter the release of a new 5 song EP.  The Fuck You EP can’t strictly be called hip hop.  It’s a blend of many genres and styles which is what gives The Knux they’re distinctive gritty, alternative electro-hop sound.  ”Floozy” and “Fuck You” are classic Knux style skateboard hip hop tracks while the rest are a little more experimental.  The EP isn’t too impressive but it seems like that’s kind of the point.  That’s also not to say you won’t enjoy it.  The name of the EP says it all, clearly these guys aren’t trying to impress anyone.  They’re making music for fun, and it shows.  To anyone who’s not into it, I think they named the new EP for you.

BlakRoc is near…

I can’t wait for the BlakRoc album (The Black Keys hip hop project featuring songs with artists such as Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Raekwon, Ludacris, Jim Jones, Pharoah Monch, and more).  I posted a little about the project not too long ago (here) and recently came across the two tracks below.  I love the Raekwon track and even though RZA isn’t great on the track with Pharoah Monch, the music speaks for itself.  This is some serious blending of hip hop and rock.  To all other projects which have attempted to blend the two genres, prepare to be blown away…
BlakRoc will be released on iTunes and independent music stores on black Friday, November 27th.  You can preorder the album here.

The Heavy – The House That Dirt Built

The Heavy is a solid rock band with a funky, gritty, bluesy feel.  Their sound manages to combine vintage guitar riffs with a modern style of genre blending.  The single, “How You Like Me Now” seems like a perfect fit for any Guy Ritchie movie.  The band formed in the UK releasing their debut album, Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, in 2007.  Their sophomore release, The House That Dirt Built was released earlier this month and it’s got some very impressive tracks.  Their songs are filled with energy and emotion and some have an epic, cinematic kind of style.  Check out some of my favorites below…

Blips & Beats (10/3/09)

- Posted by Little -

A message from Little:

So I haven’t been around for blips n beats for quite some time now. Mainly I’ve been way too busy to keep up. Im a single, successful guy, what can I say?
I will try to keep up with my posts much more often now but I have decided I won’t take forever trying to write something witty or over the top informative about the songs. Frankly I have way too many recreational drugs to do and not enough time. If you like them, dig them and find out more on your own, or ask me via comments and Ill be sure to tell you more.

Salud,
Sean, the Dead Beat Dad of Electro Posting.

Kid Koala Presents: The Slew

In the early 70’s, Dust Commander, the only album recorded by Seattle based band The Slew was rejected by labels and has since remained an obscure obsession of record diggers/collectors and serious rock music fanatics.  Jay Rowlands is the latter of these and he arranged to have a documentary made about the mysterious band and it’s mastermind, Jack Slew.  Unfortunately, due to legal complications, Slew decided to back out of participating in the documentary which ultimately killed the project, save one major score- the film’s score.  The soundtrack was put together by Kid Koala and Dynomite D who enlisted the help of former Wolfmother rhythm section, Chris Ross and Myles Heskett.  They sampled The Slew’s original material and the result is an irresistibly funky, rock and turntablism hip hop blend.  It’s definitely something special and the sound really speaks for itself.  They’re touring one time only so check them out if you have a chance…

The Black Keys rock hip hop, meet Blakroc

I’m a big fan of The Black Keys so I was pretty excited when I heard about their new hip hop project, Blakroc.  The Black Keys are known for gritty, bluesy rock with a serious edge and their style translates very well into the world of hip hop.  A rock hip hop blend has never sounded as good.  It looks like the entire process of the collaborations was filmed and will be aired as a web-series on the official website.  Also looks like Damon Dash was a big part of the whole project connecting the Ohio based band with hip hop artists from across the country.  The webisodes and forthcoming self-titled album (due November 27th), features Mos Def, Q-Tip, Rza, Raekwon, Ludacris, Jim Jones, Pharoah Monch, and more…

The Diamond Light – Krotona – record release party

9iwntc

Music enthusiasts and bloggers spend a lot of time searching for the next big buzz-worthy band so we can share it with everyone before everyone else is already talking about it.  The Diamond Light are so good and so new they are exactly the kind of band we love to love.  We think everyone will love it and we loved it first.  The Diamond Light’s edgy, bluesy rock is mature and full of emotion.  The lead singer has a powerful, soulful rock style of singing that often draws comparisons to Caleb Followil of Kings of Leon.  The Diamond Light’s first release is an EP called Krotona. It was just released this week and it’s got 8 tracks of authentic, infectious rock.  The record release party is Wednesday, August 26th at Dragonfly.  Their live show is awesome, full of energy.  Definitely make it out to see them if you can.
