Christian Banks is a true music artist. His musical compositions are works of art; each song paints a vividly beautiful soundscape for your listening pleasure. Banks’ newest project, Walrus Ghost is, as Banks’ describes it, a necessary departure from his last musical endeavor- Las Flores Project. The music and style is different while remaining familiar enough to recognize the man behind the sound. It’s still Christian Banks at his finest, but in his 2008 release, Colores y Memorias, Banks’ style was heavily based on sampling and highly influenced by chill, jazz-infused hip hop instrumentalists. As Christian explains, his sound has changed since then, which leads us to the new project name:

“So why the new name? Basically, the music sounds different and is made different than how Las Flores Project’s music happened. I think that I definitely have some inherent processes and tendencies to sounds or instruments that may subconsciously or purposefully carry over from Las Flores Project to Walrus Ghost which consequently make some ideas or songs sound similar to Las Flores Project material; however, I feel that in general Walrus Ghost has a new and different sound. Walrus Ghost had to happen because a new Las Flores Project record didn’t make sense to me at this time. So much has changed for me in terms of music that I felt I needed to start from a clean slate.”

DAFT PUNK – “Something About Us (PYRAMID Remix)”

Pyramid’s version of Daft Punk’s “Something About Us” is more of a great cover than it is a remix. There’s an undeniable groove in the original that Pyramid easily replicates and lets shine in his own take on the Discovery classic.

I came across Julio Bashmore’s track “Chazm” after seeing a facebook post from Radiohead. I followed it to Radiohead’s blog, “Dead Air Space” where I saw a playlist of songs Thom Yorke put together. You can actually stream the entire playlist straight from the facebook post on Radiohead’s page. ”Chazm” was the track that really stuck with me. It’s a trippy, space groove – very much Yorke’s style. And apparently, there’s a lot more to the artist behind the song which was released as part of a special edition 10″ vinyl release…

International Amateur Rifle shooting champion, Julio Bashmore, has just returned victorious from the world championships in Helsinki, Finland. Whilst there he was inspired by the local landscape and has delivered these two beautifully Scandinavian ice cold classics. The release is number three in a five part series of coloured 10″ vinyl, strictly limited to 350 copies each. All vinyl are coloured and numbered, with hand screen-printed sleeves. – Ten Thousand Yen

“Footsteppin’” is the second track on the 10″ along with “Chazm.” It’s another great electronic masterpiece so now I’m really interested in checking out more from Julio Bashmore. It’s pretty cool that facebook has made it possible for Thom Yorke to introduce me to a new artist. Hey thanks, Thom.

I love to check out the KCRW DJs’ album picks for each month. They’ve always got interesting choices but I particularly enjoy checking out the artists I’ve never heard of. This month, Mathieu Schreyer (12-3AM slot on Fridays) listed DISCODEINE’s self titled album as one of his favorites. I hadn’t heard of them, so I found an online stream and gave it a listen. It’s perfect to play while you’re at work, just as background music, but it would also work really well in the car- great driving music. “Singular” and “Synchronize” are my favorites so far. Nothing groundbreaking here, but it’s got a very cool vibe that you’re sure to enjoy…

Anyone know why the Diamond Messages video for their track “Liquid Summer” uses the same footage that Summer Camp used for their “Round The Moon” video? Whatever the answer is, I love the song. It’s a chill, instrumental beat with a lot of warmth. If you like this one, definitely check out their track “Smoke & Mirrors.”
