This one is an older track but I heard it again recently and remembered how much I love it. Back in March of 2009, I posted a track by a rapper called Cause. ”Everything” by Jehro is the song Cause sampled for his great track, “On The Run.”

7 Worlds Collide – The Sun Came Out

Eight years after the original 7 Worlds Collide collaboration, The Sun Came Out, a new double album of original material recorded in New Zealand is being released. ”Neil Finn & Friends” created the 7 Years Collide project which started out as live album comprised of music from 5 performances in April 2001. Proceeds from the sales of the album and dvd went to the Doctors Without Borders organization. Proceeds from The Sun Came Out will go to the Oxfam organization. The new album features songs written and performed by Phil Selway and Ed O’Brien of Radiohead, Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Modest Mouse, KT Tunstall, and Wilco members Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone. The album was released outside of the US on August 31 and will be released on September 29th in the US. DePedro is mucho bueno

Last week, I heard a Spanish song on the radio and I couldn’t get it out of my head after one listen. I found out the song is “Equivocado” by DePedro. DePedro – “Equivocado” DePedro is the solo project of singer/guitarist Jairo Zavala who has toured with, as well as written songs and recorded for Calexico and Spanish acts Amparanoia and Los Coronas. His self-titled debut album was originally released in 2008, but I’m pretty sure Nat Geo Music (National Geographic’s music label) just re-released DePedro about a month ago. The album is filled with well written, passionate Spanish/Americana style music but you can also hear influences from different genres of music such as classic rock, surf rock, and even jazz. Listen to “Tomorrow” and you’ll realize there’s something special about DePedro. The surf guitar style of “Comanche” is downright infectious. ”Te Sigo Sonando,” and “La Memoria” sound a little more like what I was expecting but I’m enjoying them much more than I ever would have guessed. The album is just a great, solid listen, one I’ve been enjoying at home and in my car. Check it out as soon as you get a chance… DePedro – “Dont Leave Me Now”

Gritty, grimey, rough rock feels good. ”60 Feet Tall,” the first track on The Dead Weather’s new album, Horehound (July 2009), is the perfect intro to an album filled with that kind of edgy, authentic rock. Definitely one of the best albums this year, check it out if you haven’t already…

The Temper Trap album Conditions (August 2009) has been playing in my car non stop since my friend gave it to me a couple of weeks ago. The band’s official website has the album coming out in August of 2009 but I think it leaked on the internet last month because a lot of people already have it. The only thing available in iTunes right now is the single. Check out as much as you can on the internet until you can get the whole album. This is another great one.

Every month I like to check out the KCRW DJ picks of the month at KCRW.com. The DJs always have great choices and occasionally they pick an album from a group I’ve never heard of. Black Moth Super Rainbow is one of these groups and they’re latest album, Eating Us (May 2009), is the band’s fourth full length release. The sound is pretty unique but if I had to describe it I would say it’s like Air meets Boards of Canada. Now I need to go back and listen to the older material.

Speaking of great things on KCRW, 89.9 is where I first heard “Strangers” by St Vincent. I think it’s a great, artistic song with cinematic qualities that instantly captivated me. St Vincent is Annie Clark, who toured with Sufjan Stevens and the Polyphonic Spree. St Vincent MP3: Strangers

The Very Best is Esau Mwamwaya plus producers Radioclit. The title track from the upcoming album features Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend. Quantic and His Combo Bárbaro

There are only a handful of albums I have ever really anticipated like Quantic’s upcoming album, Tradition In Transition, due July 14th. This album could be truly amazing. ”The Dreaming Mind” is the song in the video teaser for the album below and it’s featured on Quantic’s myspace page as well. It might be one of my all time favorites. Between the string arrangements and the funky percussion, it’s a cinematic-style masterpiece that just kills me. If I like half of the songs on the album as much as I like “The Dreaming Mind” I might find the answer to the “if you were on an island and could only have one album” question.

Here’s another pretty awesome music website that let’s you create playlists you can share with you friends. It’s called GrooveShark.com and it’s got a pretty big library of music. It allows you to upload your own songs so you can login from anywhere in the world and have all of your music. It also allows you to search for and play full songs and albums. The way this works reminds me very much of Napster (the original Napster) since it seems like the search results are based on what people have uploaded. This is probably why GrooveShark has a very respectable library of music to find. There were a bunch of songs I wanted to add to the playlist below that I couldn’t find in their library but it’s still got much more than I expected. The site also has a great custom widget builder that allows you to embed songs and playlists on any website. The one I made below is a poor example because I’m colorblind so you can’t really see how fancy you can make it look. The playlist is based on a mix I made a couple of years ago called Beat Juice.

Femi VS KCRW Soundclash

Back in February, an exclusive KCRW Femi Kuti remix album was released. Femi VS KCRW Soundclash features remixes from a bunch of the KCRW DJs. Some of them are really great. If you didn’t already know, Femi Kuti is the son of the late Afro-beat legend Fela Kuti.
