First up is “The Prowl” and “Heartbroken In Despair” from Dan Auerbach’s debut solo album Keep It Hid. Auerbach is the guitarist/singer for The Black Keys. I’ve only heard a couple of the tracks from his new album and it they’ve all sounded great so I’m pretty anxious to check it all out. The last album he did was one of my favorites. If I was making a top 5 favorite albums of 2008 list, The Black Keys’ Attack & Releasewould definitely be on the list. But I don’t really make lists. Could be a good idea.

I’m not going to pretend like I’m a huge Depeche Mode fan because I’m not really. You could make the case that I haven’t listened to enough. There are some bands like Depeche Mode that I just haven’t taken the time to get into because I feel like so many people are already into them anyway. And I know it’s not their best material but I like the new single, “Wrong”. It’s a cool track and

French pop rock… If you haven’t heard of Phoenix, I think their entry in Wikipedia might get your attention- “Phoenix started as the backing band for a remix of Air’s “Kelly Watch the Stars” single. Soon after, Phoenix released their 2000 debut album United. The name Phoenix was officially chosen in 1996 when Laurent Brancowitz permanently joined the band after the end of the short-lived band Darlin’ he formed with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who eventually became Daft Punk.” Check out Phoenix’s latest track- “1901? leaked/released earlier this week.

-

Yikes! What happened to the Black Eyed Peas? I remember how I used to love singing along with, “We be fallin’ up/ Never fallin’ down/ Keep you at a higher level, elevated ground” or “That’s the joint/ That’s the jam/ Turn that shit up, and play it again”. Now it’s “Gotta get that boom, boom, boom” and I don’t feel comfortable singing that. But even if I did, it seems like Will.I.Am is directing the music away from hip hop and into hip pop club slop, and I don’t really like it. Check out their new single, “Boom Boom Pow” from the upcoming album E.N.D. If I was a DJ, I would play it. Probably just because I know people enjoy dancing to this but seriously, there’s a 80’s style auto-tune/vocoder thing everyone is doing and I’m not into it.
Boom Boom Pow

-

CunninLynguists also had a new track leaked, “Never Come Down (The Brownie Song)”. Or maybe they actually released it. Not sure. Who knows anymore? I love the Katt WIlliams sample later in the track. These guys are pretty funny and Kno makes some amazing beats. This definitely isn’t their best work or even close to it, but it’s still an enjoyable track… especially if you’re already a fan.

Joaquin Phoenix needs to stop.

If you haven’t heard already, Phoenix is retiring from his acting career to become a hip hop musician (see earlier post). Last night, he was on Letterman and the interview was bizarre. Personally, I think that’s the point and it’s all joke. It’s like some sort of ill-conceived combination between Andy Kaufman and Sasha Baron Cohen. Phoenix and a close group of friends are probably the only ones who know about it and everyone who interviews him treats this character like it’s really Joaquin Phoenix. Making the world your stage is symptomatic of something a little strange. Even if it is all just a joke, in the end, who cares? What’s funny about that? We all know he’s a good actor already so what’s he really doing here? When he finally reveals to everyone that it was a hoax all along, then what? It’s just strange. It gets a lot of attention because of how weird and scary it is. Either way, is he on a ton of painkillers or what? Heroin? Crack? Yikes.
Here are some other bizarre interviews on Letterman:

Crispin Glover on David Letterman (7/28/87)

-

Brother Theodore on David Letterman (1984)

What the hell is Joaquin Phoenix doing? Seriously. Somebody close to him needs to be a good friend and tell him he’s crazy. You might think I’m being a little harsh, but seriously, is this guy really quitting the acting business to do this:

In my opinion, Phoenix is a pretty great actor. So now I am supposed to believe this is serious? He’s really giving up acting to try to become a rapper? And Puff Daddy wants to produce the upcoming album? ¿Que? ¿Como? Read this. Not only that, he’s also taking his good friend Casey Affleck along for the ride (here’s an hint of how that’s going). Affleck’s filming a documentary about the journey. If Affleck was really a good friend he would call the documentary, “My Friend is Out of His Mind” and he would use the film to show Joaquin what a huge mistake he’s making. People have to be worried about Phoenix. Look at the end of the video when he falls off the stage. It’s scary. He’s probably just drunk or on something but it’s still pretty ridiculous.

But he needs to leave the hip hop world alone! He was great as Johnny Cash. He should sing some country songs or some rock songs or something. Anything! Just not hip hop. His rapping is just terrible here. I feel embarrassed for him. But how does he quit acting to do something he’s no good at? I bet everyone he knew was always like, “Hey, you are a really great actor.” But no one can say to him, “dude, you are an awful rapper”, really? His friends don’t think so? He doesn’t think so? Puffy doesn’t think so?

Hopefully, this is all just a big prank. You got us good Joaquin. You got us really good. You like Andy Kaufman way too much Joaquin. But good one.
