Everyone loves covers, remixes, and mash ups.  Here are some of my recent favorites and some I just haven’t posted until now…

First song is “No You Girls” by Franz Ferdinand.  You’ve probably heard the song if you’ve seen those new iphone apps commercials.  I want to know how those deals work.  To advertise the iphone and it’s applications, Apple probably has to pay the people who own the apps and the people who own the rights to the songs in order to use them in the commercials.  But the apps and the songs sell much more copies after the commercials come out.  Everyone involved wins- Apple sells more phones, the app owners sell more apps, and the people who own the rights to the songs sell more music.  Apple knows how to make itself look good.  Most of the time.  I think a lot of that is because someone from KCRW must be picking the music for those Apple commercials.  They’re always playing the same songs on KCRW.

Second song is Knaan’s “Take A Minute”.  I wrote about the Somalian born, Canadian MC K’Naan in the earlier post about Coachella.  He’ll be playing on the Sunday.  I don’t like all of his tracks, but there are a bunch that I like a lot.  Here’s another one…  (And check out other K’Naan tracks in the earlier post)

Third song was just leaked recently.  It’s Dr Dre, Nas, and TI and it’s called “Topless”.  I don’t even know if this is a final cut.  The quality isn’t great but you can get an idea of what the end result might sound like.  The beat is a little redundant but Nas still kills it.  I wish he had the first verse on the track and maybe a third thrown in again after TI.  If anyone knows what this track’s going to be on or what it’s from, let me know!

First song is the new Franz Ferdinand track, “Ulysses”.  I’m not a big Franz Ferdinand fan but I do like this song and a couple of other tracks of theirs.  This song was produced by one of the guys from Hot Chip, Dan Carey.  The new album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand is set to be released early next year.  The band is also going to do what a lot of groups have been doing with singles off of upcoming or recently released albums- a remix contest.  So if you remix the track and win, then your remix will appear along side the single when it’s released next year.  Details at beatport.com…

Second song was sent to me by Ryan Upton.  It’s “28 Butts” by Little Jackie.  It’s clear that the success of Amy Winehouse’s Black To Black has had a serious influence on a lot of the music being released these days.  Haven’t you noticed that a ton of powerful female vocalists have been coming out with songs and albums that have that vintage yet updated motown-soul style sound with lots of horns and heavy drums.  Is it a fad or is it going to stick around for a while?  Either way, nice find Upton!

Third song is Tenacious D’s “Dude, I Totally Miss You” performed live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno – Thursday night’s show.  They’re hilarious.  And obviously they rock.

Fourth song is another track from The Knux.  It’s the “Cappuccino (Remix)” and, as you probably could have guessed- based on the fact that I’ve probably sent about 5 of their songs out on these emails-I love it and I love them…
