Thenewno2 played at The Regent downtown around Main and 5th.  You walk through a short hallway with different pieces of art hanging on the walls before entering the small theater which has a very intimate feel to it and surprisingly great acoustics. Thenewno2 played the best show I’ve seen from them yet. The fantastic set of psychedelic rock blended perfectly with the feeling and mood of the venue. It made for an incredibly enjoyable show. Lead singer Dhani Harrison took out a megaphone for “Give You Love” and the place started going wild.  Then I realized how quickly the room filled up for Thenewno2’s set. The fans came for a show and it was a great one. Another awesome moment came when keyboardist/guitarist/backup vocalist Jon Sadoff and Dhani both started shredding a heavy rock riff on their guitars right next to each other on the small stage with everyone in the audience jumping around, getting crazy, having a great time.

After Thenewno2’s show downtown at the Regent, Danny Chaimson started his set at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Chaimson is a talented singer/songwriter with a bluesy, funky jam band kind of sound. He put on a fun and impressive, feel good performance with a great crowd of his fans and friends. Although the artist only looks to be in his twenties, his music was that of a an old and refined blues soul. I was really impressed with the show and had yet another excellent music experience- two great shows in one night- now on to Vegas…

Fight From Above played at Molly Malones in Hollywood and it was another awesome set. Lead singer Justin Miner was recovering from pneumonia and his voice still sounded incredible.  Their live shows have a much more aggressive, edgy sound than L.A. Kids, their debut full length album.  L.A. Kids is perfect the way it is, but you have to love it when a band turns it up a notch for the live performances.  The energy virtually explodes out of Dave on drums and Zack and Krook blast the crowd with guitar, bass, and backup vocals.  It was an energetic and enjoyably visceral live music experience and a perfect way to end the weekend….

Weekly Dose (2/15/09)

First song is “Fondue” by Tosca.  Tosca is comprised of Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame) and Rupert Huber.  Their new album is called No Hassle and I haven’t been able to figure out if it’s already released or if it will be released in April of this year.  Tosca has mastered the chill out, electronic beats since the 90’s and it really shows with this new album.

Second song is Bishop Lamont’s “Grow Up” produced by Dr. Dre.  There’s been all sorts of stories and controversy with Bishop Lamont, Aftermath, and the rest of the hip hop world but the fact of the matter is, the guy’s got talent.  In the end, as far as the music is concerned, that’s all that matters.

Third song is “Yomp” by Thenewno2.  I was introduced to them about a year ago by my friend Jon Sadoff who plays keyboard/guitar/vocals for the band.  I’ve written about them a couple of times before but now I found some links to songs you can play straight off the site.  The band is, according to the band’s myspace: Dhani Harrison: lead Vocals/Guitar, Oliver Hecks: Drums, Jon Sadoff: Keyboards/Guitar/Vocals, Jeremy Faccone: Guitar/vocals, Jason Hiller: Bass.  Dhani is George Harrison’s son and the similarities aren’t just limited to the fact that Dhani looks almost identical to George around the same age.  Their music also bears strong similarities.  I’ve compared Thenewno2’s sound to Portishead and Pink Floyd while others have added Massive Attack and Brian Eno.  They’re playing live on the Conan O’Brien show tomorrow night so make sure you check them out…

Thenewno2 – Key Club

Just got back from Thenewno2 at the Key Club earlier tonight.  It’s the 3rd time I’ve seen them (second at the Key Club) and it was another great show.  The music is a cross between Portishead, Pink Floyd, and something else I can’t quite put my finger on, but it rocks.  For the most part, the songs are very relaxing and downtempo, great chill out music- gorgeous psychedelic rock.  But there is also an occasional burst of aggressive, edgy energy that is irresistibly enjoyable.  The point ischeck them out! Sorry, I could probably write a lot more about them but it’s almost 3 in the morning and I have to wake up for work in 5 hours…
